Hyun is tasked with Wook Pyeon to go to the 14th floor to save Dusik, the lady, and the children. Unbeknownst to Hyun, the lady has already succumbed to monsterization and became the Infant Monster. Hyuk then secretly tells Hyun that the children should be treated as optional and should be abandoned if they need to save Dusik's life, infuriating Hyun.

As Hyun thinks over his ideals, he runs into the face monster. He soon realizes the monster is one of the survivors, causing him to hesitate killing it. This causes Hyun to lose faith in his ideas, and join up with the gang. His first assignment is to go with Ihyun Jo to destroy every other monster they can find.
After a few days, Jayhun, Jisu, and Hyun decide to leave the apartment in search of supplies and a safer hideaway. However, they are attacked by the Tentacle Monster, and Hyun becomes severely wounded in as a result. Wook Pyeon and Hyun return to bring him to the lobby, which lets him repair the elevator. He then warns Jisu Yoon of the Snail Monster's ambush as the survivors try to clear the garage. At some point Hyuk Lee and Dusik create a risky last-resort plan to escape the apartment, using a makeshift harpoon and rope, in case of extreme emergencies. He eventually becomes a monster before giving his survivor friends time when he tries sacrificing in order to kill some monsters in the garage, and gets killed by Wook Pyeon. They manage to distract the Steroid Monster long enough for the kids to get away. The Blind Monster then arrives due to the commotion, and attacks the Steroid Monster. Hyun is eventually forced to distract the Steroid Monster again, but the group manages to get the monster out of the building.

After they leave, Dusik notes, with some disappointment, that his desire was to simply get his leg back. He stands up for the first time in years, vowing to not let a monster through. However, Dusik notes he is too late, but is brought to tears that someone ran back to save him. He succumbs to his injuries and and falls unconscious, only to reawaken as a monster moments later. On this, director Lee Eung-bok said that " know some of the viewers were anticipating more gore, but hope they will understand why monsters were absent from some parts of our drama." When he went to high school he had short hair but after his classmates began to bully him he stopped caring about his physical appearance. His hair grew longer and looked messy and he had bags under his eyes because of the lack of sleep.
After the monster apocalypse began Hyun-Su tried to help his neighbors in everything he could even if sometimes it was not appreciated enough. One evening, Hyun-Su finds his delivery parcel all over the corridor outside, leading directly to his starving neighbor’s blood-soaked room, where he saw the bloody collar of the owner's cat. He cowers back to his room, but she promptly arrives at his peephole after he has locked himself inside his apartment. She tells him that her cat is gone and pleads with him to open up his door. When he asks to see her arms she becomes aggressive and scurries away with blood oozing from her nose. As he heads outside to look for the woman, he finds Sang-Wook who’s standing in the hallway and passes out right in front of him.
